Growing up in the 90's was as many today would say the best decade to have grown up in. Music, Films and technology were all changing and growing in a way that has defined the world today. But every Thursday night me and my family would be plopped down in front of the television to watch one of our favourite series: Living Single.
The show is so popular that decades later, making friends around the world, friends who also grew up watching the series would verbally exclaim which character from the series I am. I think we all saw ourselves in one, a few or even all of the character. I'm an adult black man and I can say I related to all of the characters, male and female of Living Single. The series that predated and inspired the series Friends was the natural progression of Black American culture as it relates to tv.
The Cosby Show revealed to us (black people) that we could be what we wanted and be financially secure. A Different world inspired us to attend not only a college or university, but HBCU's and Living Single showed us what a solid upbringing and a good education could result in. You could "ride the maverick" and be a lawyer. You could rock your locs and be a rising stock broker, you could own your own magazine, be figuring it out or be a fashionista on a budget. Living Single gave us hope.
Fast forward to the present day and Maxine Shaw 'Attorney at Law' (Erika Alexander) and Sinclaire James-Jones (Kim Coles) has teamed up to create the Re-Living Single podcast where they rewatch the iconic series and give us all the behind the scenes tea. Rewatching any series with your favorite characters is a treat, now so more than ever in this climate of uncertainty, anxiety and battles of depression. This slice of nalstagia is just what the doctor ordered. So tune in to the Re-Living Podcast starring Erika Alexander and Kim Cole’s.
